I never saw myself as someone capable of raising children and therefore never wanted to have a child. However, I always loved having children around me because their freedom from societal constraints and ability to make magic in any situation, something that disappears with adolescence and only return to select old age people who have been able to let go of everything that they believed in as so called “adults.” Then, after ten years with Dely, we were to have a child. I prayed for a daughter and she arrived within a matter of weeks, her name was Gabriela. I was forever changed. Gabriela was a divine being, untouched by the exterior world and Dely was the most radiant and beautiful mother that ever existed. I sang to Gaby every day, Vincent Gallo’s “Honey-Bunny” being the bed-time favourite.
She was born, I saw her face for the first time and the ancient, hormonal-endocrineal shock of recognition of the continuity of life got me, I was lost, madly in love and would never be the same. Then we got the news: “It’s probably nothing”… “Irregular heart beats”… Before we knew it we were signing the papers that would allow Gaby to undergo open heart surgery.
Gabriela was saved by a miraculous surgical procedure, we were allowed to visit the intensive care unit for one hour a day, the nurse said that the only thing that calmed her was the tape of “Honey-Bunny” that I had left with the nurses.
Looking back at these pictures I can see that the fragility and destruction of the landscape resonate with the fragility of life itself.
Gaby’s life-force gives me hope for the future and humility to have been lucky enough to live in a society with such advanced medicine, but also perplexity that the same society is even more ingenious in the art of destruction.
(«probablemente no sea nada…»).
