Hidden Portraits
X-rays from the I&R Icono Studio (2011–2016)
These pictures were selected and edited from the archive of celluloid X-rays of the I&R Icono Restoration Studio. The resulting project subverts the images’ original intention by presenting them as “photographic portraits”, but of personalities from the 16th and 17th centuries. Most of the artists who created the original works received their commissions from the monarchy and the nobility or from the Church; the former in order to consolidate an image of power, the latter with the main intention of infusing the concepts of religion and sacred history in the minds of an illiterate public. However, removed from any context, each of these effigies now acquire the autonomy of a portrait alien to its time.
